These coins were made between 1793 and 1857. All years are represented between these dates with the exception of 1815, when the copper that was available had to be used to make ammunition. No coins were struck during this year and production was resumed in 1816.

In the early days of 1793 the first half cent and large cents were struck. This new coin depicted a bust of liberty with flowing hair and a frightening look upon her face. The public was outraged with the initial design presented to them by the mint and pulled no punches letting the mint know. The design was changed the same year several times, ending with a capped bust version that finally won the public approval.
