Cappadocia Caves - History Underground

The earliest history of Cappadocia, Turkey dates back to prehistoric times and the early bronze age. The Assyrian civilization started their own writing script that can be found on clay tablets unearthed from archaeological digs in this region. They also created an extensive trade system for here and the surrounding regions.

After that came the Hittite empire, whose hieroglyphics were also found here. After that came the Greeks, and later the Persians led by Alexander the Great.

Roman rule saw the migration of early Christians to Cappadocia to escape religious persecution. The Christian friendly Byzantine empire flourished and it was at this time that the natural cave formations of Cappadocia were developed as underground shelters and cities.
